The semester I had the absolute pleasure of interning at Chez Hope Family Violence Crisis Center. I was able to meet several amazing women who decided to make a change in their lives and the lives of their children. Unfortunately, we did have a few survivors that came through our program who returned to their abusers. This internship was very fulfilling to me. I'm a very compassionate person who wears my heart on my sleeve. I've had days were I would go home and cry because I was feeling hopeless because I'm a fixer and I want to help everyone in every situation. I never realized that just my presence there and playing with their children during focus groups or one on one time, or just our one on one time where they really had the opportunity to open up to me. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the center manager, and I was truly able to become an advocate for the survivors. I would like to continue to work with domestic violence shelters to continue to help these individuals better themselves.
